Upper School

Upper School marks the culmination of the Waterford experience. As students move from childhood into young adulthood, they gain access to a tapestry of challenging academic courses, clubs, activities, sports, performances, student leadership and service opportunities, extra-curricular travel, social activities, and much more.

Upper School students reap the benefits and value of a liberal arts education as they move into advanced courses in English, history, math, science, foreign language, physical education, and fine arts – including a wide selection of 17 AP courses. Every course, regardless of subject, is infused with passion, clarity, insight, and critical thinking. The classroom experience is defined by the hallmarks of excellent teaching: effective classroom decorum, a well-rounded curriculum, clear expectations, thorough preparation, careful evaluation, and meaningful dialogue with students.

These elements come together to create a unified and fulfilling educational experience that expands intellectual boundaries, creates good habits, builds confidence, and – ultimately – prepares students for college and for life.

Upper School Highlights

Small Class Sizes

Classes and study are focused on the depth and breadth of Liberal Arts offerings; and students experience small classes with an average class size of 16 students to allow for meaningful discussion time, lab work, and deep learning. Class Deans follow students all four years of Upper School, ensuring students have consistent connection and mentorship with a member of the Waterford faculty.

Classical Liberal Arts Curriculum

Balanced in classical roots with a contemporary awareness of our responsibilities as global citizens, Upper School students explore the thoughts, philosophies, and great works of many cultures and ages in demanding coursework in the core subject areas of English, history, language, math, science, and fine arts.

Advanced Placement (AP) Courses

Available in the upper grade levels, Waterford offers 17 AP subjects and has one of the highest passing rates in the state of Utah.

Waterford is a place full of people who are not only passionate about everything they do, but who are also always willing to help one another. I am so grateful to the faculty for shaping me into an independent thinker with a true thirst for knowledge and for always challenging me to do my best. I know that my education has prepared me well for the years ahead.
