Upper School Mandarin Chinese Teacher

Full-time Upper School Mandarin Chinese Teacher

Waterford School is Utah’s premier liberal arts, college preparatory private school for students in Preschool through High School. Student learning is Waterford School’s reason for being. Since its founding, the School has instilled habits of independent thought, critical thinking, responsibility, passionate learning, and service to others. Waterford School’s liberal arts program provides a strong foundation, and the campus culture prepares students to pursue lives of meaning and purpose. Waterford delivers a world-class education distinguished by a rich curriculum, an outstanding faculty, a deep commitment to student growth, and a learning environment that is caring, nurturing, and inspiring.

The Waterford Mandarin Chinese program was established five years ago, and has now grown to the point of requiring a second teacher. Working closely with the Chinese Program Director and World Languages Department Chair, the new Chinese teacher will need to be comfortable teaching at the Upper School level, grades 9-12, including courses ranging from Chinese 1 through AP, and possibly also Chinese as a heritage subject for students who may speak the language but do not yet read or write it. Specific course assignments will depend on the expertise of the candidate and the needs of the department.

The ideal candidate would hold an advanced degree in Chinese, or a related discipline, and would have at least two to three years’ appropriate teaching experience. The candidate should also be skilled at teaching with educational technology in a 1:1 laptop environment. The successful candidate will be able to develop a healthy rapport with students from ages 14-18, and will embrace Waterford School’s mission, vision, and values in curriculum, teaching, and membership in the community. A full-time course load entails full teaching responsibility for up to five courses, each meeting for one hour four times per week.

The Waterford campus is set on 45 acres at the foot of Utah’s Wasatch Mountains, one of North America’s premier outdoor and recreational areas. The school offers an outstanding working environment. The atmosphere is collegial; both families and faculty show a genuine commitment to learning. Benefits include medical, dental, 403(b).
