Early this spring (actually during our Spring Break), Waterford students participated in some important math competitions.
On March 4, twenty-three Waterford students (Class VII – XII) traveled with Mr. Golze and Ms. Orton to Weber State University to compete in the Utah State Math Competition. This week, the Utah State Math Competition released the results and we want to add our congratulations to the following students:
Of special note is that Kiran (‘25) scored first place not only in 7th grade but also on the entire Junior Exam (Grades 7-9). In addition, Tarun (‘21) and Evan (‘20) tied for first place on the entire Senior exam (Grades 10-12).
Unfortunately, this year’s awards banquet was cancelled, but these students will receive prizes and awards delivered to them individually.
On March 7, our Middle School math team comprised of Kiran R. ‘25, Brian W. ‘25, Ujan R. ‘24 and Shayan P. ‘24 and coached by Tarun M. ‘21 and Masaki T. ‘21 competed in the Utah State MathCounts competition going head to head individually and as a team against over 20 schools and 100 individuals. Waterford School’s team placed fourth in the State with two top 10 finishers. Brian W. ‘25 took 9th place and Kiran R. ‘25 took 1st.
Kiran’s first place qualified him to represent Utah again this year at the Raytheon National MathCounts Competition. Unfortunately that event which was to have been held this week, had to be cancelled. However, Kiran is attending a special MathCounts online event this week.
Every year, Waterford participates in the American Math Competition (AMC). This year, students who took the AMC8 exam in November scored well enough to earn Waterford a spot on the MAA School Honor Roll, the only school in the state of Utah to accomplish this. In February, Dr. Bennett joined Waterford students at a reception with MAA President, Dr. Michael Dorff, to receive the award.
In addition, students who score high enough on the AMC10 or AMC 12 competitions earn an invitation to the American Invitational Math Exam (AIME). This year Waterford had 5 students earn this invitation: Liam R. (‘27), Kiran R. (‘25), Brian W. (‘21), Tarun M. (‘21) and Evan L. (‘20). Students were preparing to take that 3 hour exam the first week we returned to campus this term. Sadly, that exam along with the follow up US Math Olympiad exams were cancelled.
Nancy Woller is currently serving as the Chair for Waterford’s Mathematics Department and holds the Heuston Endowed Chair for Teaching. Nancy has always viewed herself as a teacher. At the age of 17, Nancy was recruited to substitute for her math teacher in her old high school. There was no looking back and from that point on, teaching and education have been her passion. She came to Waterford over 20 years ago after teaching in Oregon, California, New York and Utah and has experience teaching at all levels from elementary to secondary to university. Nancy holds a BS in Psychology and an MA in Mathematics, both from Brigham Young University and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership and Policy at the University of Utah. Nancy has four children (all Waterford alumni) and enjoys the rare times when all can gather. She loves to travel and has been known to unexpectedly run into Waterford alumni in places as far afield as Queenstown, New Zealand, a street corner of New York City, an airport in Manchester, England, and even in an In-and-Out Burger in Las Vegas. Besides teaching and spending time with her family, her favorite thing to do is to listen to people’s stories.
