Within that context, the Visual Arts department offers a Lower School curriculum emphasizing the elements and principles of art and design, along with guided practice in a variety of art making processes and media. The Lower School Art teacher’s primary responsibility is to provide student experiences that promote exploration and experimentation, intentional curiosity, and creative problem-solving with an emphasis on process over product. The Lower School art teacher represents Waterford’s art program not only to the Waterford community through student exhibitions across our campus, but also in the greater community. The successful candidate will be able to develop a healthy rapport with Lower School students and parents, and will embrace Waterford School’s mission, vision, and values in curriculum, teaching, and membership in the community. The Lower School Art Teacher Reports to the Lower School Head.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Teach art to third grade students through various art media, including the figure, drawing from nature, three-dimensional art, contemporary and historical art, and basic principles of design
  • Consult with homeroom teachers to coordinate curricula when appropriate
  • Arrange for and hang high-quality art exhibits across campus
  • Support and participate in Arts Week
  • Collaborate with colleagues
  • Communicate with parents
  • Attendance at meetings and other school events
  • Commitment to a plan of professional growth and development
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Lower School Head or Head of School

Qualifications and skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Masters degree or degree in art education preferred
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Solid understanding of child development
  • Ability to break down complex concepts into achievable and understandable smaller steps.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, desire to develop collaborative relationships with teaching faculty, and have humor and patience
