Director of the Waterford Fund

Waterford School seeks an energetic, organized, and experienced Annual Fund Director to join the Advancement team. The Director of the Waterford Fund will plan and execute a financially successful annual giving program ensuring quality donor cultivation, solicitation, and recognition with increased emphasis on a portfolio of leadership prospects. The ideal candidate will have a track record of successful face-to-face solicitation of leadership-level gifts and a high level of confidence in connecting with prospective donors and volunteers. The candidate should have the ability to work independently and as a member of a team in a fast-paced environment, and be able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks by employing effective management strategies. This position requires strong organization and interpersonal skills, the ability to communicate effectively both in speech and writing, as well as computer-based prospect management skills. Salary is commensurate with experience. Reports to the Director of Advancement.

Fundraising

  • Develop and execute a dynamic and detailed strategic fundraising plan for the Waterford Fund, setting goals based on analysis of donor base and school needs
  • Design a solicitation plan and compose Waterford Fund appeals and related correspondence for a highly segmented constituency group
  • Execute a strategy to grow the number of leadership donors ($2,500 or more)
  • Work with the Communications office to design solicitation pieces and Increase use of well-designed digital marketing for fundraising purposes
  • Oversee periodic assessment and creation of specific target ask amounts
  • Manage the planning and implementation of leadership donor events
  • Collaborate with Admissions on constituent background details and connect with Admin team/faculty on student status to inform donor strategy
  • Oversee specific projects, including senior gift program, class-by-class participation challenge, and Giving Tuesday challenge
  • Benchmark and improve Waterford Fund programs and strategies, identifying opportunities to improve and areas of strength to build upon
  • Collaborate with Alumni Director, Class Agents, and Alumni Council to organize an effective alumni solicitation and reunion giving program

Major Gifts

  • Maintain and grow a portfolio of major gift prospects to cultivate and solicit outside of the regular Waterford Fund campaign
  • Partner with Major Gifts committee and colleagues to identify prospective donors and determine priorities for research
  • Assist the Director of Advancement in expanding donor base and giving from foundations, corporations, and other supporters; identify promising grant/funding opportunities and assist in the application process
  • Support Waterford’s preparation for an upcoming comprehensive campaign

Volunteers

  • Recruit Waterford Fund Council in summer, train in fall, and support throughout
  • Establish and manage the calendar of peer-to-peer, volunteer solicitations
  • Coordinate phone efforts, create and maintain master solicitation lists, send regular updates, and respond timely to volunteer inquiries
  • Serve on Waterford Fund, Advancement, and Major Gift Committees
  • Effectively communicate with colleagues and volunteer leadership (WF Council, Board, and Advancement Committee) regarding strategy and progress
  • Recruit and lead faculty volunteer chairs in maintaining our 100% participation

Communications

  • Collaborate with Communications office to ensure the School’s brand and overall communications strategy is consistent and fosters a culture of philanthropy
  • Oversee the production of the Annual Report
  • With Communications office, develop Waterford Fund theme, content, and messaging for print and electronic media, as well as video production
  • Submit Waterford Fund information in the Waterford Weekly e-newsletter, update “Giving” section of the website and social media
  • Distribute monthly emails with Waterford Fund solicitations or education

Stewardship/Database

  • Actively participates in the School’s prospect management system to ensure that communications and interactions move donor relationships forward
  • Design and execute personalized stewardship plans across constituencies, including appreciation events, thank-you phone calls, and more
  • Support Advancement Assistant in regular and timely acknowledgement letters
  • Collaborate with Admissions office on enhancing New Family experience as it relates to philanthropy at Waterford
  • Provide timely, detailed and accurate data reports for the Advancement team and other fundraising volunteers
  • Coordinate gift preparation, acknowledgment, pledge invoicing, and fulfillment, as well as Annual Report lists in conjunction with the Advancement Assistant
  • Conduct research on donor prospects, create donor prospect biographical research reports, and add relevant research information into Raiser’s Edge
  • Oversee Raiser’s Edge reports section

General

  • Assist Director in the day-to-day operations of the office
  • Prepare and manage Waterford Fund budget
  • Attend parent and alumni events, committee meetings, and schoolwide functions as needed to connect with constituents
  • Cultivate a professional network of colleagues at other institutions to serve as a resource for new ideas
  • Stay abreast of best practices, industry trends, and emerging technologies
  • Remain conversant with the full range of Waterford’s philanthropic priorities

Qualifications:

  • Strong commitment to Waterford School Vision, Mission, and Philosophy
  • Familiarity with the culture of independent schools
  • Excellent attention to detail, creativity, including the ability to manage multiple priorities, take initiative, and work under tight deadlines
  • Proven ability to work independently, as well as be an effective team member
  • Strong computer skills required including MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite, and Google Suite a plus
  • Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge and independent school culture is an asset.
  • Some travel and evening/weekend work is required.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and ability to work in a changing environment required
  • A minimum of 5-7 years experience is required; non-profit and fundraising or marketing experience a plus; Bachelor’s degree required
