Congratulations to students Kiran R. (VIII) and Liam R. (VI) for their incredible performance in the 2021 MATHCOUNTS National Competition! Selected as two of the four students representing the Utah team, Kiran and Liam anchored the team to its best ever placement.

Among the highlights:

  • Both students earned $750 scholarships for qualifying for the national competition.
  • Kiran was honored as one of eight students nationwide to have represented their state three times.
  • The Utah team finished in fourth place, its best ever placement. For comparison, Utah’s previous best placements were ninth place and twentieth place.
  • Liam finished as the third—ranked individual nationwide, earning him a $3,000 scholarship. This is the best performance by an individual from Utah in the history of the competition—the previous highest ranking of an individual was 24th.

Overall, both students demonstrated excellent teamwork, earning the highest Team Round score of any team. The Utah team was coached by Class XII student Tarun M. with Hiram Golze as faculty advisor. To read more about their accomplishments at the state level, click here.
