Waterford Students Enjoy Outstanding Achievements in State-wide Competitions This Weekend.
Waterford’s Ethics Bowl Team took FIRST PLACE at the Utah Regional Bowl on Saturday. This is a huge win and reflects the careful case preparation and contributions of more than 20 students over the last few months. Several of our seniors have been part of the program for three years. Six students qualified to go on to a playoff round for nationals. These include: Alexia P. ’22, Esme S. ’22, Megan W. ’22, Garrison H. ’22, Isa W. ’24, and Sierra S. ’24. The Ethics Bowl Team is coached by Julie Ransom, Emily Mortensen and Josiah Alderink.
At the Regional Ethics Bowl, students presented their answers to difficult moral questions. Topics ranged from whether schools have an ethical obligation to monitor student emails to whether humans should try to prevent animal suffering in the wild. All year, our Ethics discussions have been thoughtful, challenging, and lively. These students are mastering the essential art of civil dialogue about challenging issues.
The Waterford Science Department brought two teams (a total of almost 30 students) to a Science Olympiad tournament last weekend at Centennial Junior High in Kaysville where we competed with roughly 10 other teams, including our “rival” schools, West and Hillcrest. Last Saturday, February 5, the Debate Team competed in another tournament with great accomplishments. Zoé B. (Class IX) placed second overall, which is huge, especially as a novice student. And, Diya G. (Class XII) placed third in Extemporaneous Speaking!
