Science, Math, Art, Music, or all of the above? A Liberal Arts Education

What is a liberal arts education and why does it matter? A liberal arts education is a broad and holistic approach to learning, emphasizing on critical thinking, communication, strong writing skills, and the ability to form connections across disciplines. At its core, it is learning for the sake of learning, rather than focusing solely on a specific career or technical skill. At Waterford, students engage with an array of courses from science, math, history, and English to Latin, world languages, visual arts, performing arts, and athletics. In Waterford’s Educational Philosophy, these subjects are not meant to be learned in silos. They are meant to be experienced together, creating a deeper, more interconnected understanding of the world.

Through this education, I have learned to approach each subject through a broader lens. I’ve come to understand that every skill I carry – from community service, where I’ve learned to think of others, to sports, where I’ve developed discipline and teamwork, to academic settings – has become part of my life both inside and outside of school. By fully engaging with each subject, I’ve grown more aware of my surroundings and discovered how different disciplines connect and merge.
