Waterford is happy to announce that senior Joaquin Zavala was named a 2018 Daniels Scholar.

Joaquin was one of 26 students selected in the state of Utah to receive the prestigious Daniels Scholarship. The Daniels Scholarship provides grant money to cover the remaining cost of attending college for four years, including living and other expenses, after the student has received college financial aid and other scholarships. It also provides mentorship and leadership training throughout four years of college, to support ongoing achievement and success–academic and financial. The scholarship allows students to choose the college that is best for them, regardless of ability to pay.

"The Daniels Fund application and interview process is intensive and thorough–it was not easy, and Joaquin showed his usual persistence in completing it. It was just the final step to Joaquin's four remarkable years of hard work and success in the Waterford program. His Waterford teachers and the Waterford community should be proud of Joaquin and his work. He has received many fine acceptances, and now can truly choose the best program for his college experience."  -Sari Rauscher, Director of College Counseling

Applying for the Daniels Scholarship Program is a competitive process with many qualified candidates. Out of 2,250 applications, only 238 were selected as Daniels Scholars. To see a full list of scholars, click here

About the Daniels Scholarship

The Daniels Fund, established by cable television pioneer Bill Daniels, is a private charitable foundation dedicated to making life better for the people of Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming through its grants program, scholarship program, and ethics initiative. Bill Daniels valued strength of character, leadership potential, contribution to community, academic performance and promise, and well-roundedness. Joaquin and other Daniels Scholars were chosen because they demonstrate these distinguishing qualities.

With this announcement, more than 3,950 students have received the Daniels Scholarship. Since 2000, more than $170 million in scholarships has been awarded through the Daniels Scholarship Program. For more information, visit DanielsFund.org.
