Upper School Visual Arts: Featured Artist
Peter Beck ’11
Peter Beck, Class of 2011, makes paintings and drawings with a focus on the reflection of light off of various surfaces. His work depicts how value in reflection shows the structure of a reflective surface, as well as how we see different colors and values when light is reflected at different angles.
Peter recently had one of his pieces selected for the prestigious touring AP Portfolio show. His oil painting “Door Reflection” is one of only 30 pieces selected from 42,000 portfolios. Besides the 24 electronic submissions for each portfolio, each applicant mailed five physical works for evaluation. Peter’s painting was one of 210,00 physical pieces that was evaluated from around the nation. Works for the exhibit were selected by a group of teachers who had participated in evaluating the portfolios.
The exhibit will be on tour throughout this 2011-12 year making stops at the Annual AP Conference in San Francisco, CA, in July; the Chauncey Conference Center in Princeton, NJ, in August; the College Board Regional Forum in Chicago next February; the National Art Education Association Annual Conference in New York City, next March; and the AP Studio Art Faculty Colloquium in Chicago next April. The exhibit will also be shown at a number of schools that have large gallery spaces, including the Booker T. Washington School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, most likely in January through February.
