Middle School Curriculum Summaries
English
Students develop strong writing and reading comprehension skills, read a challenging body of literature and poetry, and learn to think critically about and analyze what they read.
History
Through three intensive years of history, students study a broad range of topics, including U.S. History from Civil War reconstruction to the present, important twentieth-century cultural and socio-political events from around the world, Medieval Europe, Medieval Islam, and ancient history.
Foreign Language
All Middle School students will complete 3 years of Latin. The study of Latin will establish a broad foundation for language learning and prepare students to engage with modern languages in the Upper School at a deep level. Latin will also benefit our students in English, the sciences, and other disciplines. We expect that after three years of Latin instruction our students entering the Upper School will understand grammar and language structure in a way that will allow rapid progress in the modern language of their choice (French, Spanish, or Mandarin Chinese-2013).
Mathematics
Initiating the formal study of abstract mathematics, studies include a pre-algebra course (a transition from elementary math), a beginning Algebra course, and a beginning geometry course.
Science
Includes one term each of beginning biology, geology, genetics, and physics, two terms of chemistry, and a full year of physical science. Students learn the basics of good science, including clear writing, close and accurate observation, and the ability to support assumptions with solid evidence.
Computer Science
Through three terms of computer science in Grades 6 and 7, students learn important software applications and explore computer programming basics. Advanced programming classes are also available during Grade 8.
Visual Arts
Through three years of visual arts classes, students learn basic drawing and design skills, explore and expand their artistic talents, and discover the joys of creating art. Courses include an overview of art disciplines and techniques, advanced drawing, clay and metal sculpture, and photography.
Music
Students explore the history of music, study music theory and analysis, learn to play an instrument, and discover the joys of performing. Students can choose to specialize in stringed instruments, brass and percussion, woodwinds, or chorus.
Physical Education
At Waterford, sports and physical education play a crucial role in every child’s development. The physical education curriculum combines aerobics, strength and conditioning, and outdoor sports to teach students the value of staying healthy and establishing lifelong habits.
Dance
Students with an interest can take advantage of Waterford’s dance program. Courses include an introduction to formal ballet, as well as more advanced instruction in technique, improvisation, choreography, performance, and dance history.
Theater
In Grade 8, students with an interest in theatre can take an improvisation course that exposes them to the basic principles of dynamic acting. This course is designed to awaken a passion for theatre in students and help them explore and expand their talents.
