Academic Support Programs

The Waterford School offers a highly specialized form of tutoring and academic support programs that focuses on improving skills primarily in Reading and Math for students with diagnosed learning differences.  Additionally, a comprehensive program is offered to provide explicit instruction, support and strategies in all areas of executive functioning, include general organizational skills as well as support in preparing for exams.

The school psychologist and the School Dean recommend students for tutoring through a careful review of the neuropychological exam, with all requests for tutoring requiring review and approval by the Dean. Typically students meet for tutoring three to four times per week during a study hall or an elective block throughout the week.

Tutoring

Students and tutors work in a one-on-one partnership within the Academic Support Program that is tailored to meet students’ specific needs. The ultimate goal is that students find independent success in the subject. With that in mind, topics focus on areas where students have the most difficulty. Tutors coordinate efforts with teachers as they work from current texts and materials. Tutors also communicate with parents through a midterm and final report, which outlines student progress.

Writing Center

Additionally, under the direction of the Department Chairs and the Director of the Academic Support Program, students may also access one-to-one tutorial support in the Writing Center, which offers consultations for students at all stages of the writing process.  The Writing Center supports writing projects from all disciplines, and works to promote effective peer review.

Math Lab

Also included in the Academic Support Program is the Math Lab.  This lab is designed to support students and is staffed by the Math Department faculty.  The Math Lab program connects students with any member of the math department, not just their current teacher.  This lab is used to reinforce concepts and provide a constructive environment for students to grapple with challenging homework assignments.
