Another Round of Honors for our Student Visual Artists
Waterford visual arts students recently received an impressive batch of recognitions in two different venues.
Congratulations to our very talented students for another outstanding showing at the Regional level of the 2013 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards — the oldest and most prestigious program in the country. Our region includes Alaska, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, Oregon, and Washington. Of the 97 regional awards received by Utah visual artists, 68 were won by Waterford students. This included 24 Gold Key Awards, 10 Silver Key Awards, and 34 Honorable Mentions. Additionally, one of our Gold Key winning pieces — Monkey Fez by Lauren Groathouse ’14 — was chosen as one of five American Visions Nominees (considered the “best in show” award for the region). All Gold Key winners advance to the National competition; we are now eagerly awaiting these results, which will be announced in mid-March. Seniors whose portfolios win the top National award receive a $10,000 scholarship. Please click here to see a gallery of the Gold Key winners. The rest of the winners will be posted as soon as we are able (there are a lot!).
Additionally, three Waterford students had work accepted into the 41st Annual Springville Museum Utah All-State High School Art Show: Lauren Groathouse, Aspen Johnson, and Sungin Youn. Lauren was further recognized with an Honorable Mention in the Third Congressional District, and Aspen was further recognized with a Juror’s Award of Merit. The show opens February 20 and features the work of high school artists from all over the state.
We are proud of our dedicated and multi-talented student artists!
